Project Title: DDHK: Connected City – Hong Kong Stories
Category: Event Design / Exhibition Design / Stage Design

Overview:

“Connected City: Hong Kong Stories” is an immersive exploration of Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage, presented by Design District Hong Kong (DDHK). This event showcases local emerging designers and fashion teams who use their creations to tell the story of the city. With a focus on both indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces, the project blends storytelling with innovative design to captivate and inspire attendees. As the designer responsible for this immersive experience, my role spanned the creation of the event’s 3D visuals, stage design, and multimedia content.

The Challenge:

The challenge was to create an event that encapsulated the vibrancy, energy, and cultural diversity of Hong Kong through both fashion and design. The fashion show, held at Lai Chi Kok D2, needed to create an environment that symbolized the city’s bustling streets, while also providing a dynamic backdrop for the local designers’ creations. Additionally, I was tasked with ensuring a seamless integration of technology to enhance the immersive experience for attendees.

Creative Solution:

At the heart of this project, I embraced a vision of immersive storytelling, ensuring that every aspect of the design—stage, exhibition booths, and lighting—told the story of Hong Kong. The fashion show at Lai Chi Kok D2 was conceptualized to evoke a sense of light and speed, drawing inspiration from the city’s fast-paced streets. The design used mirrors as reflective surfaces to create dynamic visuals that amplified the speed and vibrancy of Hong Kong’s culture. A sound and light backdrop added an extra layer of depth, mimicking the rhythmic energy of the city’s urban landscape.

Execution:

  1. 3D Modeling & Digital Visualization:
I began by creating 1:1 3D models for the exhibition and stage design. Using advanced 3D software, I crafted digital representations of the fashion show stage, exhibition booths, and other design elements. This allowed the team to visualize the space in detail before construction, ensuring everything aligned with the event’s vision. The digital models also helped with precise planning and logistics, making sure all technical aspects were executed smoothly.
  2. 3D Naked-Eye Image Presentation:
A significant part of the project was the naked-eye 3D image presentation, which served as a key visual element during the fashion show. I oversaw the operation and monitoring of the technology, ensuring that the 3D visuals complemented the stage design and added an additional layer of immersion. This cutting-edge technology allowed the audience to experience visuals without glasses, enhancing the sense of depth and movement on the stage.
  3. Video Editing for Event Recap:
After the event, I curated footage from the exhibition and fashion show to produce an activity review video. Through careful video editing, I selected impactful moments from the event and pieced them together into a cohesive narrative that highlighted the most significant elements of the project. This video was crafted not only to showcase the success of the event but also to highlight the innovative use of design and technology.

Impact:

The “Connected City: Hong Kong Stories” event was a success in bringing together the best of Hong Kong’s emerging designers and fashion talent while offering a truly immersive experience for attendees. The design elements, including the reflective surfaces, dynamic sound and light displays, and 3D visual presentations, effectively conveyed the energy of Hong Kong’s streets and urban landscape. The video recap also became a valuable asset for DDHK, preserving the event’s legacy and inspiring future projects.

Key Skills Demonstrated:

  • 3D Modeling and Visualization: Designing detailed, digital representations of complex spaces, allowing for precise planning and visualization of event spaces.
  • Stage and Exhibition Design: Creating an engaging and immersive environment that enhances the event’s narrative and aligns with the creative vision.
  • Multimedia Integration: Ensuring the seamless integration of video, sound, and 3D technology to amplify the audience’s experience.
  • Video Production & Editing: Curating and editing event footage into a compelling narrative that captured the essence of the project.

Conclusion:

“Connected City: Hong Kong Stories” served as a powerful testament to the creative potential of Hong Kong’s fashion and design community. By blending immersive stage design, cutting-edge 3D visuals, and dynamic multimedia, I was able to create a unique, visually stunning experience that transported the audience into the heart of the city. As a designer, my goal was to ensure that every element of the event told the story of Hong Kong, and through thoughtful design, I helped bring this vision to life in an unforgettable way.
